Danny Korduner is the owner and operator of Margarita’s Dishes, which is located inside the Calgary Farmers' Market on 77 Ave. Danny’s mother Margarita started the business shortly after having emigrated from Ukraine. Back then, it was a small café located in downtown Calgary but it quickly became known for its authentic Eastern European cuisine.
Danny is very proud of his mother because it was not easy for her to go into business as a new immigrant. “Money was tight and language was a barrier at times. But she found away to provide food and service in a home-style way.”
Meanwhile, Danny was in New York studying and managing his cousin’s business, which was a combination deli-café. “The hands-on approach to learning was very good for me,” he says. “I learned how to serve people food in a quick-serve environment that excelled in customer service.” He built upon his knowledge by working in cafés in Los Angeles and Victoria, BC, eventually rejoining forces with his mother to open Margarita’s Dishes.
