On most summer days, Kara and Nevin Fenske can be found inside their food truck, Drift, putting together sandwiches for a long line of people downtown, at the 124 Street Grand Street Market and at a multitude of festivals. Over the past few years, food trucks have been as synonymous with the summer season as festivals in the city. But that’s been a big shift since the couple first opened Drift in 2011.
“Even for the first few years, people were unsure about the idea of eating food from a truck. There was a stigma about it, and we had to work hard to be like: ‘No, we know what we’re doing; it’s clean in here. It’s all good,'” says Kara. “They just weren’t used to trucks as a vessel to serve. But now, they actually get excited about it.”
Since then, food trucks have become popular across North America and food shows are even devoted just to this one subset of the food scene. In fact, Drift was actually featured on Eat St. – a Food Network show about street food – in 2012.

Drift comes to us by the former owners of Dovetail Delicatessen (which is unfortunately closed). But, don’t worry! The same owners continue to operate the amazing Drift Food Truck. They have amazing sandwiches that come with great sauces. You can also buy their Drift Ketchup and Drift Spice in jars to take home!
View this Smart ListVoted best food truck by Avenue magazine multiple years in a row, Drift is definitely the king of the food trucks in Edmonton. Their pork belly sandwiches come on buns specially made by a local baker and come with pickled carrot, daikon, cilantro and chili mayo. They also serve up weekly herbivore and carnivore specials, buttermilk fried chicken and roast beef sandwiches. Ketchup is made in-house and sold alongside jars of Drift spice, which goes great with fries and various meats.
View this Smart ListAll of their famous sandwiches are only $8, which is a killer deal, especially if you consider that the ciabatta buns are made fresh and there is a ton of quality protein on each sandwich. The sides are also reasonably priced – only $2 for potato crisps or $3.50 for fresh cut fries with their house made ketchup. A decent sized container of soup will run you $4.50. But, if you get a sandwich and one side, you’ll be plenty satisfied.
