You may not think of Surrey when you think of hotspots for great Ukrainian food, but there’s one café that’s bucking the trend. At Round Up Café on King George Boulevard, you can find some of the best Eastern European fare available on the West Coast. “I have cabbage rolls, I have perogies, I have Ukrainian sausages and I have borscht,” says manager Tanya Abendroth, who’s been here since 1977. “…Most popular would be the borscht.”

She notes with pride that all the food is homemade, even the perogies, which take a lot of time and preparation to create. Tanya says all the food has been homemade since Round Up Café first opened in 1959, when Goldie and Orest Springenatic first opened their doors to the Surrey community. Orest passed away in 1995 but Goldie’s been holding the fort since, Tanya by her side.

Canadian Comfort Food

I moved to Surrey 2 years ago and just couldn't find any restaurant that served good old fashion home cooked greasy spoon diner fare. I spotted Round-Up Cafe on a drive by and decided to pull over and try it out. They refurbished the chairs to a fabulous sparkly silver. It is cozy and comfy and very clean and the owners are extremely friendly. I ordered a soup for my toddler and a special for myself. I was surprised the special came with a soup and a desert which was nice for $12. Coffee is $2.10 and they only charge once and are excellent with refills. Food was 'just like grandma used to make' very tasty. Soup was a bit to peppery for my taste buds. My main was excellent but if you don't want gravy, you need to order it on the side or they pour it on. Coffee was excellent. My son loved the vanilla pudding - another unexpected surprise. The restaurant was packed at lunch on a weekday. This is a restaurant I would recommend Grandad to visit. Nice old fashion 1940s diner feel with good home cooking.

Local family owned cafe. It isn't fancy but if you want old time home cooked this is the place. The locals are well aware of this treasure in their midst. Want fries...these are real hand peeled and cut, the burger patties are hand made, the breaskfasts are great as are the entres. If you want good food this is the place just don't expect linen tablecloths. The decor shows their support for the many years of local kids baseball. Go find out what the locals already know!

The best places for breakfast and brunch in Surrey

A short walk from Surrey Central Station and City Hall, Round-Up Cafe has been serving greasy spoon favourites since 1949. Retro décor enthusiasts will instantly be drawn to the diner’s kitschy neon sign and classic black-and-white tile flooring, but they’ll stay for an equally iconic roster of cheese-loaded omelettes and syrup-slathered hot cakes. Adding a uniquely Ukranian twist to breakfast, you can also ask your server to bring a side of perogies with your morning meal.
