“We buy whole fish from the fishing community. Then we do the clean-up and preparation here in the kitchen, so our fish is fresh and local,” says Jegan Kandasamy, owner and operator of WindJammer Restaurant. This approach means that it depends on the time of the year whether his customers are enjoying cod, halibut or salmon with his fresh-cut fries at his licensed establishment.
As a close friend of the previous owner, Jegan leapt at the opportunity to take ownership of this successful fish-and-chip shop – which has been in operation since 1972 – when it arose. Taking the reins in 2006, Jegan has continued the friendly neighbourhood restaurant’s legacy of serving great-tasting fish and chip platters made with fish caught fresh in West Coast waters. In 2011, increased rents forced Jegan to find a new home for WindJammer Restaurant on Commercial Drive, where he and his team have been proudly serving a mix of new neighbourhood folk and loyal patrons ever since.
