As a kid, summer in the '70s for Malcolm McMillan meant casting a hand line, catching flatfish mostly, and dropping a crab trap off the decrepit wooden pier at the foot of Discovery Street and Locarno Beach in Vancouver's tony West Point Grey. You'd be hard pressed not to see him there regularly; simply, he was a boy who loved to fish.
It was 1979, and during his final weeks of high school, graduation looming and no job prospects, fate stepped in; his childhood friend's parents, the Mooreheads, opened Longliner Seafoods, which stands today as one of Granville Island's only shops still under its original ownership. For the next 14 years, buddies Scott and Malcolm worked together, even venturing out to a second location at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver, until amicably parting ways in '93.
Love this little seafood place in Newport Village. Not sure, but it appears to be family operated because you certainly get that feeling while in there. Had the fresh salmon patties last week and they were delicious. A little bit more expensive than the regular grocery store, but worth it. We often pick up mussels from here as well and they are always quality. If you're not sure what to make for dinner...and craving seafood. Stop here...you're always going to find something tasty and fresh, plus get great service!
