gave it a 2nd chance the one on Lancaster that is, well not again for us, got take- out, took forever, was told 5 mins for a pulled pork with soggy onion rings and chicken thigh sandwich with stale fries, 15 mins later the chef(whom I confronted as he passed by) packed it up for us because our server had gone AWOL, it had been sitting there for 10mins or more not sure lost track of time. No one in the place either on a friday afternoon at 3pm was told we came in at great time will be quick well maybe because the fries must have been leftover from the lunch crowd why can they not make great fries and onion rings they cost enough go down the street and get fresh fries from the chip stand at Victoria or just go and eat there. So upset the price is not cheap and the buns are all wrong for the meal too.Maybe the waitress or greeter was mad I did not put a tip for take-out was going to give her some cash but after that no way. boiling hot in there too glad we weren't eating in.
I went there for lunch, takeout. One thing I can't stand is eating chicken that was previously frozen. It's rubbery and tasteless. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich which he enjoyed.
I had visited the smaller location "hog tails" by erbsville and it was good but when i arrived at the new Lancaster location it seemed a bit different from the LANC that was there before, but still the same..if that makes any sense.i had ordered the pulled pork, cornbread and sweet potato fries and everything on my plate was cold, my spouse who had ordered the same dish had the same problem. No one came by to ask us how we were doing. I'm not sure if i will visit again.
we have had take out form the Laurelwood location and was always pretty good, well yesterday we finally got to eat in at the lancaster location, what a dive, dirty chairs, and floor. Now the food, the blackened chicken was not blackened at all and had shrunk in size for $8.00, the fries although alot were undercooked same with the onion rings, the corn bread was cold no butter for the dry thing, no one ever came over to ask how the meal was, no ketchup at the table or vinegar and never got any and it was NOT crowded at all, no dipping sauce for the lack lustre onion rings, tiny amount of coleslaw on the plate, the roll was not toasted and tasted stale, no iced tea made. So very unhappy with this new location. We have gone to Paris, Camp 31 lots of times, and never had a bad meal, the pulled pork sandiwch is big, not like hog tails for the money.
Discovered this place about 6 months ago and it has become one of my favourite 'haunts'!.I have not had anything yet that is not great. The quantities are very large and if you leave still hungry then you certainly are an unusual person. The onion rings are the best I have ever had anywhere!! Kinda small place but I understand it is moving to the Lanc..I hope it does not change its atmosphere, the ladies are EXTREMELY friendly even when it is very busy and people are lined up out the door!
The title says it all. I usually don't write stuff like this, but this place was so awesome I just had to!! I just read a few other people's reviews, and I really can't imagine what they are talking about!! Did they go to the same place I did today?!?! I had a 2 meat meal with ribs and beef brisket and I wish I had a bigger stomach!!! Every bite of my meat was like a little piece of heaven, and there was SO much food for the price! I have been to a few places in Florida and Tennessee, and these guys sure rank up there with the real thing!! I also had the baked beans and potato salad. Everything was SOOO good and you can tell it's all homemade! One of my collegues had a huge "po-boy" catfish sandwich that she said was the best sandwich she has had in her life, and my other friend had the pulled pork and onion rings, which were HUGE and DELICIOUS!! I'm not a "foodie" but I know good food when I taste it, and this place is my new favourite!! Our waitress was such a sweet heart, and the manager even came over and chatted with us for a few minutes, I think she is the owner's daughter. She told us about her parents travelling and learning the trade, and you can really tell!! I can't wait to go back!
Oh, my god, I just had their three meat platter for takeout, after reading such good reviews about this restaurant. The food was the worst bab-b-que I have ever had. The beef brisket was dry and stringy with blobs of fat. The pork ribs seemed undercooked and dry and overly chhared on the outside and the chicken was rubbery and dry. I couldn't finish the meal, threw out over half of it. The only thing I liked was onion rings, they weren't so bad I guess, nothing spectacular but at least they were edible. What I don't understand is why the place was packed with people and others waiting for takeout. I would definitely not go there again. Gross food.
Many of times I've been to this place, loved the food. This time was a disappointment. Pulled pork was rubbery and not very good, collard greens were tasteless. (both I've had before and they were great, that Friday night wasn't so much) Seem to be finding it's a hit and miss there, sadly they were out of brisket on a Friday night around 7pm. I'd try it again, but seems to be a hit and miss some nights. They have a great thing going and it's been more hits on the food then misses. Hope this isn't what's happening to this great little BBQ joint They should get the empty store beside them and expand, always packed and always a wait for a table, glad I get take out.
My wife and I decided to try something new this past saturday night. I have been forced to enjoy BBQ almost exclusively while travelling due to the lack of BBQ in southern Ontario. The sauce here was excellent! The ribs and Chicken were both charded black. Too much to really enjoy the taste. The pulled porks was fantastic! The hushpuppies were a little on the dry side as was the cornbread. I do prefer my cornbread served warm. The floor in the dinning room was very slippery from grease.....watch your step! I will likely give this place a try for lunch some time just to be fair. All in all not a great first experience but everyone is allowed an off night.
Living in Kitchener-Waterloo we dont have many BBQ joints so my friend showed me hog tails and i left full and very happy!! the pulled pork is amazing and the ribs are done just right!! i also love the cornbread, its a bit small of a piece but delicious none the less. I will definitely be back
Not even two months gone by and Piggy went back, this time with twice the party size. The menu's hard to read, so this time we took our time. To my surprise they actually did serve pig tails! They come in a snack size under the Carnivore list and as a meal under the Favourites. Piggy got 4 tails which were delicious! The little bits of skin were chewy and sticky, and they were covered in sweet dark sauce. The meat was very tender and delicious. On the sides mollasses beans with bacon bits and the biggest onion rings in town. Ice Tea - too sweet. And the corn bread could have been warmed up or toasted a litle. Overall great service and tons of food.
Piggy had heard all the buzz about this place and finally the time had come to check it out, when he met up an old friend for lunch. So they rolled in at noon and were quick to be seated and served. The menu was not the easiest to read, and the best options were not obvious. So Piggy went for the 2 meat platter and a bottle of beer and here is what he thought: 3 Ribs : A little too charred on the outside, could have been more tender. Did not fall off the bone as easily as expected. Great flavor overall. Pulled Pork: Great with the addition of sauces available on the table, however a little too dry\lean at times. Could have used some more fat or juice. Corn Bread: Piggy would have preferred if the corn bread was piping hot with some butter on the side, and a little sweeter. The consistency was fabulous, and the crunchy crust just right. Collard Greens: Well cooked however, slightly too acidic. The bacon bits in them were a nice addition. Beans and Rice: The rice and beans were not cooked together. The rice was placed in a bowl and the beans on top so it was not the typical rice and beans that Piggy is used to. Both items tasted great however and were a good compliment to the meal. Beer: Warthog Ale and other good beers are available to be enjoyed with all this meat. Sauces: The sauces on the table were ok; however some specialty Hot Sauce, other than Tabasco, and even some homemade chili sauce would have really set Piggy's tail on fire.
We went here on a Sat night and the place was packed. I was pretty excited to try this place after reading the reviews on this site. The waitress was quite friendly and checked on us at an adequate level. Unfortunately, the food took too long to come out - probably because they were very busy - which is however no excuse for any restaurant. We ordered the meat platter to try all the different bbq'ed meat - unfortunately most of it came out luke warm. The ribs were dry and the pulled pork was undersauced. The collard greens were too watery and under-seasoned. The corn bread was greasy and flavourless. The ribs were OK - Swiss Chalet ribs are better - not a good sign for a BBQ joint. I was expecting the dish to be better as the platter was the most expensive dish on their menu. This is a good place to grab a quick lunch, but that's about it. I definitely would not go back again for a Fri/ Sat night dinner.
We do take out every now and then and it's good but the real deal Hogtails experience in my opinion is eating at the restuarant. For the last couple of weeks I have been eating at the restaurant with my kids (ages 6 and 4) for dinner when my wife is working late. The staff is super friendly, the atmosphere is totally relaxed and the food is always great. We typically get ribs or bbq chicken with a salad and a couple of side dishes - never disappointed. The biggest advantage with eating at the restaruant is the extra bbq sauces on the table - sweet and smokey - both are so good I have seriously considered just squirting some in my hand to eat. Portion sizes are huge, so lots to take home. Hogtails is a great spot for wonderful food that you cannot get anywhere else in town.
Go here at lunch with co-workers every once in a while. Always get the pulled pork... It is the best pulled pork I have ever had, their BBQ sauce is to die for. You have to try it, if you don't you're seriously missing out
Wow. Up front, I'm not a BBQ rookie, I used to work in Texas a lot where BBQ is religion. So I was looking forward to some southern style bbq. I had the Louisiana Chicken Po'Boys. My coworkers picked it up take out. I've never seen anything this burnt in my life. There's char-broiling and then there's cremating. This was the latter. The chicken was so burnt it was like eating charcoal. There were even flecks of charred-something in my coleslaw. For a place I heard good reviews about I was shocked how bad this meal was. By far the worst bbq I've ever had. But hey, everyone else seemed to enjoy it right? Guess I was just fortunate enough to get food the day they cooked with a blow torch.
Our first time visiting. Very friendly staff, great atmosphere and excellent food. The only complaint we have is the chicken wasn't cooked in the center. We will definitely return. Best Coleslaw and sweet potato fries we've ever tasted.
Arrived to an unexpected lineup out the door, which we took to mean we were in for a great meal. We gave up on the idea of eating in after being told it was a 40 minute wait for a table, and decided to order takeout. We were then told it was a 40 minute wait for takeout. We're still trying to figure that one out. Hopefully the people who waited 40 minutes for a table didn't have to wait another 40 for their food. Needless to say, we didn't wait for takeout. We'll definitely try again, maybe order ahead of time just to avoid any future problems. I'm giving the food 4 stars just based on what I could smell and see (almost torture, considering we didn't get to eat anything!)
I was so pumped to hear that a real BBQ joint had opened up in Waterloo, I couldn't wait to eat there so I took two of my employees as a treat. All 3 of us ordered the 2-meat platters, and the saff were very friendly. Unfortunately, the food came cold. The pulled pork was cold, the sweet potato fries were cold, etc. In fairness, the brisket was hot, but the cold pulled pork and roasted chicken was really disappointing. Taste was good and the meat was cooked properly. I will re-visit to give them a 2nd chance, but I was slightly disappointed.
Heard all the amazing things about this place and decided to try it out. The server was very friendly and being as it was our first time helped us with any questions we may have had. The owners were also very friendly and told us some stories about a few photos that were plastered on the walls. The restaurant was very clean and organized. The food was absolutely to die for. The ribs were so mouth watering. My husband had the wings and they were delicious as well, loved the smoked flavor. The only thing we will not be ordering on our next visit would be the hush puppies. They were dry and didn't offer much taste.
