Charm and professionalism define Montreal jeweller Bijouterie Diplomate. From the moment a customer steps into the shop, they're greeted by gentlemen who show patience, availability and a willingness to listen. These traits make all the difference when it comes to earning their customers confidence and putting them at ease.
Creative talent and a love of precious materials are the golden rules for this family of goldsmiths. The business was founded in 1970 by the family's patriarch, Mr. Kelendii, who arrived to Montreal a few years prior from his native Syria. He'd already learned the trade from his father, who'd schooled him on the origins, tradition and precision of jewellery making. Motivated by passion and a new generation's sense of adventure, he moved to Quebec where he sold his watches and jewellery on the road, travelling from Abitibi to the Gaspé.
The economic situation in the '70s didn't make the move an easy one, but Mr. Kelendii's commitment to Canada gave him the courage to invest by buying his business on the Plateau Mont-Royal. "I learned everything the old way, in the purest tradition. It's the best school!" says Ralph, one of Mr. Kelendii's sons. "Though of course we continue to learn every day."
"Today we have two stores," Ralph continues. "My cousin Sam and my other brothers also work at Bijouterie Diplomate. Each person is fully involved in this profession that requires a lot of patience, communication and dexterity. We manage everything: administration, accounting and [we] work in the workshop."
