Montrealers appreciate few things more on a balmy summer evening than sitting street side to enjoy a fresh homemade gelato from a neighbourhood crèmerie. For the residents of Little Italy, Pile ou Glace is just what the doctor ordered to bring the temperature down a bit – and to satisfy that sweet tooth.
“We create our own gelato, and we have between 30 and 35 different flavours at all times,” says Pile ou Glace owner Cédric Manen. “Everything is made from scratch according to the traditional Italian recipe, which we adapted, tested, and re-tested in order to serve something that really reflects our vision, whether it be our twist on the classics or even our own creations,” he explains.
Among the traditional gelati, the nut-based flavours are some of the most popular with customers. “Our roasted almond, hazelnut and pistachio flavours are among our top sellers,” says Cedric. “Our pistachios are imported straight from Sicily, so our end product is of a rare quality.” All Pile ou Glace gelati are made from the traditional, wholesome base of milk, eggs and sugar.
We love this terrace located in Little Italy, but we love the food there even more. And on a hot summer’s day, it’s their cold treats in particular that grab our attention. Pineapple, berries, candied chestnut, rum-raisin, white chocolate, peach... the choice, albeit a difficult one, is very much yours. Enjoy!
