You want your first date to stand out from the rest, but that doesn’t mean it has to be expensive! It should be fun, unique and… shouldn’t be too messy. As a rule stay away from tacos, finger licking ribs, and crab legs that require you to get in there with your fingers and mouth. We would be giddy with excitement if we were taken to these fabulous first date spots in Montreal.[Image credit: iStock.com/ Anna Bryukhanova]
What’s more romantic than a picnic? Dinette Triple Crown is a Southern restaurant in Little Italy that allows you to take your food to go in a picnic basket so you can eat at the beautiful park across the street. Their baskets come with different BBQ sauces and even that quintessential red checkered tablecloth. Southern food can get a little messy for a first date but we assure you that this is the most original first date restaurant in Montreal!
This Italian snack bar is a pizza haven and casual Italian eatery that will wow your date. Their squash carpaccio dish with pickled chillies, homemade crème fraiche and candied nuts is out of this world. Their porchetta with pistachios and tuna mayo is the perfect summer dish, and their ricotta gnocchi melt in your mouth. They make their pizza with love, in their wood burning pizza oven, and the ambiance is relaxed, as your date should be!
Restaurants come and go in Montreal but L’Express remains. This French bistro opened in 1980 and they have been wowing patrons for years. Modeled after a bistro in Paris, dinner at L’Express is tried, tested and true. Their steak tartare and onglet steak with shallot butter are well known all over the city. And their veal and mushroom ravioli is a bit of heaven in your mouth. Stick to a classic like L’Express!
What’s more gorgeous than a rooftop bar in Old Montreal? (The answer: nothing!) Terrasse Place D’Armes in the Place D’Armes Hotel is the perfect spot for a first date. Ambient music, fun cocktails and even a few bites if you’re feeling peckish. With Kyo Bar Japonais and Suite 701 below Terrasse Place D’Armes, if your date goes really well you can go downstairs for an elaborate dinner.
You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream! Kem CoBa on Fairmount Street in the Plateau is an artisanal ice cream shop that specializes in sorbet, ice cream and unique soft serve flavours that change weekly. They’re known for their long lines that curl around the corner onto Clark Street, but if you’re on a first date you can chat away while waiting for their famous soft serve cones!
Perhaps we’re rather romantic but we would love a first date at Marché Jean Talon. Stop for oysters at La Boîte aux Huîtres, which has its own outdoor booth in the summer, or is located in Poisonnerie Aqua Mare in the colder months. They sell all types of oysters for you to eat at their oyster bar. The samosas at Le Tartarin are to die for and we love popsicles from Les Pops! Don’t forget to find the kiosk that sells the natas for dessert… Mmm!
