5 on-the-spot benefits of getting a relaxing seated massage

History

The seated massage technique was invented in the United States in 1980. It is actually an adaptation of the Amma massage, which the Koreans and Japanese originally developed by drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine. Until its arrival in the US in the 70s, traditional Amma massages were given lying down and involved the entire body. It was subsequently modified and seated massage was created.

Definition

The seated massage is similar to Shiatsu, Swedish massage, chiropractics, acupuncture and reflexology. It is often done in public places (like malls) or workplaces because it’s so simple and fast. While it is not considered a therapeutic massage, it aims to boost your well-being after just one sitting.

Technique

  • The recipient must sit on a specially designed chair. The recipient rests his or her face, shoulders and torso on the support of the chair. Once in a comfortable position, the back, shoulders, arms, head and neck are ready to be massaged.
  • The massage therapist will massage you directly over your clothing.
  • You do not need to remove your shoes, jewellery, or watch.
  • The massage itself consists of "kata", a sequence of movements (pressure, tapping, stretching and gliding) that are performed at a rhythm and choreographed in a particular order.
  • No rubbing or stroking is involved with the seated massage.
  • The massage is performed on all parts of the upper body: shoulders, back, neck, hips, arms, hands and head. Only the legs and feet are not massaged.

Benefits

The seated massage is meant to:

  1. Release the flow of blocked energy stuck in the body
  2. Lowers stress levels
  3. Increases concentration
  4. Relieve painful muscle tension due to sedentary, repetitive or physically demanding work
  5. Create a calm, relaxed and invigorated feeling

Adverse effects

There are very few restrictions for a seated massage. That being said, a seated massage is not recommended:

  • After just eating a large meal or on an empty stomach
  • For pregnant women, people who’ve been injured, or anyone with serious medical conditions

Fast, effective and inexpensive

In addition to being fast and effective, it's quite inexpensive. You might want to suggest it to your boss or colleagues. Massage therapists are mobile and often visit workplaces to provide quick sessions during office hours and lunchtime.
