7 fashion sins to quit right now

January 4, 2015

Are you guilty of making one of the seven worst style mistakes? Here’s a universal code of style rules that apply to everyone.

1. The era of suntan pantyhose is over

Yikes! Does your sock drawer still contain the horrors of this fashion nightmare? Nude nylons are way past their expiry date, so you can go right ahead and throw them in the garbage.

While they have long helped us create the impression of a somewhat healthier skin tone during the cold season, they are now viewed as unnatural and out-dated.

2. What size do you really wear?

You wouldn’t dream of wearing shoes that are too tight or too large, so why wear ill-fitted clothing? Clothes that are too tight or too baggy aren’t doing you any favours. Keep in mind that the wrong size can minimize your best assets — and even add ten pounds.

3. Too monochromatic

This goes for black too. Monochromatic looks are very fashionable, but you shouldn’t be painted in the exact same colour from head to toe. Add dimension to the dominant colour scheme with a contrasting statement accessory, whether it’s shoes, jewelry or a handbag.

4. Less is more

Too much makeup, too many accessories, over-styled hair, or worse, all of the above, is a little tacky. Overdoing it will detract from the look you’re aiming for. The secret is a balanced and natural look.

5. Showing too much skin

There’s no need to give it all away. In fact, you’ll make more of a statement if you show a little skin but know where to draw the line. Ultra low-riding pants are strictly forbidden; nobody wants a sneak peak at your love handles or your day-of-the-week underwear.

The same rules apply to necklines and hemlines on skirts or shorts. Keep your private parts, well, private!

6. Dressing like "The Church Lady"

High-waisted jeans and pants are by no means any more flattering than ultra low-rise waists. Eliminate this hazardous look from your wardrobe once and for all.

The same goes for mid-calf length dresses and skirts. For some petite ladies measuring 5 feet and 3 inches or less, a hemline falling below the knee is still too long.

7. S.O.S. underwear

There are a few pitfalls to sidestep when it comes to bras and panties. Choose undergarments that are outfit-appropriate and suitable for the styles you wear. Most importantly, no clear plastic straps.Divert unwanted attention from your derriere by avoiding the appearance of panty lines at all costs.
