The onset of meningitis is usually sudden. Here are some tips that can help you spot the early signs of meningitis, and relieve neck pain. If symptoms continue, call for an ambulance immediately.

How to spot the signs of meningitis and relieve a stiff neck

Some symptoms to watch for

Meningitis is most common in children, but can strike an any age. Early symptoms can be similar to those for flu, and include:

  • Cold hands and feet
  • Limb pains or neck stiffness
  • Pallor
  • Blotchy skin
  • Vomiting

More alarming symptoms may follow, such as:

  • Severe headache
  • Stomach cramps
  • A blank stare and delirium
  • Sensitivity to light.

The glass test

The most serious form of meningitis may be accompanied by a tell-tale rash of red or brown pinpricks on the limbs, which may develop into red or purple blotches or blood blisters.

  • If you press the side of a glass to the rash and it doesn't fade, call for emergency help.
  • If someone is feeling seriously unwell, don't wait to see whether a rash develops before calling for an ambulance.

Relieve a stiff neck

Your neck has to carry the three to five kilogram (six to 10 pound) weight of your head all day long, and poor posture or support when sleeping can lead to strain.

  • Seek medical advice if the neck pain is sudden and severe or accompanied by other symptoms, such as high temperature, pins and needles or numbness in the arms or hands.

Otherwise follow this simple advice to speed your recovery:

  • Keep moving: Try to move as normally, but gently, as possible. Taking mild painkillers will help to make this more comfortable. Concentrate on not slumping or slouching to avoid further strain.
  • Warm your neck muscles: A gentle massage in a hot shower will help. Or try wrapping a hot water bottle and holding it to the centre of pain. A compress made by soaking a small towel in hot water is another way to bring relief.
  • Sleep on it: A special neck pillow can make a real difference in the case of chronic pain, or it may be time to replace your regular pillows.

Recognize the early signs of meningitis and alleviate neck pain with these tips. If in any doubt or if any of these symptoms are accompanied by a fever, call for an ambulance.
