Teenagers are constantly redefining their idea of what's cool, so entertaining them is no easy feat. But believe it or not, games they'll enjoy do exist. Here are some hints to help you choose.

If adolescence can be summed up in one word, it’s change. That’s why it’s so difficult to know at what point a child has outgrown their current games and toys, and what would really make them happy.They're constantly redefining their idea of what's cool and fun, so entertaining them can be tough.

In early adolescence, some childish tendencies remain.

• Some games are still relevant with for 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds. For more advanced teens, 15 years of age and older, it’s important to remember they're experimenting with different tastes and styles, which can change overnight.

Video games are everywhere now, and for the most part, they're actually designed and marketed specifically for adolescents. It's not difficult to name the most widely sold and popular gaming consoles on the market today – they're advertised everywhere. They have different features and advantages depending on their target audience.

• Personal computers and tablets are another indispensable gaming platform for teens. Apps offer games and sophisticated graphics, but more importantly they can be used for other tasks such online research and homework.

Adolescence is a very special time, and it's difficult to reduce their experience to a single trend.

• Instead, learn as much as you can about their changing taste and what styles appeal to them.
• Ask them what music they listen to and pay attention when they speak passionately about their plans, hobbies and ideas.

If you do, shopping for games, activities and electronics will be much easier. Not only are games leisurely and educational, they have potential to expand from what was initially a toy (keyboard, small battery, paint set, etc.) to discovering a future profession or skill.
