Danny Nguyen and his family never planned to own a restaurant. Friends and relatives had always complimented Danny’s mom’s cooking and told her she should make cuisine her career. Both Danny and his mom Diep Cao worked at Balo Vietnamese for a few years before the family purchased it in in 2014.
A self-taught chef, Diep is now satisfying the food cravings of Balo Vietnamese patrons with hot bowls of pho and stir-fry dishes. “She’s been cooking her whole life,” says Danny. And his family brought their love of food to the restaurant business. “We like eating,” he says with a smile.
On the corner of Eighth Street and 13th Avenue Southwest, this redbrick restaurant with high ceilings features a substantial outdoor patio in summer. A family-run affair, Balo’s pho noodle bowls include the bestselling sate beef noodle soup. Also try entrees such as the cashew chicken stir-fry, grilled chicken with tiger prawns and various vermicelli bowls. The menu also features Korean- and Thai-influenced dishes.
