Deborah Herringer Kiss says she welcomes snowy, muddy feet on her gleaming white downtown Calgary art gallery floors. “It means we’re being well-visited. That’s important!” she says to a customer who is apologizing for the tiny mess he’s tracked in on a particularly slushy winter afternoon. Deborah’s eponymous art space is largely white, but also features an exposed wood-beam ceiling. It’s a warm backdrop for the primarily Canadian and American artwork she displays for sale. Big, vibrant colours, challenging textures and media and bold themes are what you’ll most often find on the walls at the Herringer Kiss Gallery.
Operated by Deborah Herringer Kiss, this gallery shows the works of established and up-and-coming American and Canadian artists. The gallery has exhibited works that include steel sculptures and silkscreen prints by local abstract sculptress Katie Ohe – the first commercial gallery showing of the internationally known artist’s work.
