In 2009, Montreal entrepreneurs Castle Ho and Simon Touzin opened the first Boutique 1861 shop on St. Catherine Street. By 2016, they had expanded to include five branches, an online store, more than 100 employees and had helped breath life into a struggling neighbourhood. What's their secret? Impeccable taste, a lot of work and a touch of nostalgia.
Before going into business, Castle and Simon dreamed of creating a unique place in the city where femininity, style and elegance would be celebrated. At a time when fashion was all about the sporty look and neutral colours, Castle was dreaming of fine lace, soft pinks, delicate embroidery and vintage, unique pieces that are worn like jewellery. "It's Castle who does all of the buying," says Laura Vernerey, director of operations. "Boutique 1861 is all her. Each piece is chosen with care and represents the brand to perfection."
