Le Gourmet Burger set out not to normally make what we know as burgers, but rather to compose what you wish for burgers to ideally be in your imaginings.
Entrepreneur Georges Najjar is always looking for the next big challenge. He travels the globe keeping an eye on what is going on elsewhere and whether it would work in Montreal. That’s what led him to open Le Gourmet Burger in 2009. “The trend of a fancy version of a burger had yet to start in Montreal,” recalls Georges. “I saw it when I travelled. People were fed up of the usual burger. They were willing to pay two dollars more for a better quality burger when they knew where the food was coming from and when the products used were fresh. We knew there was a niche for that.”
Not long after, rave reviews and accolades started pouring in. It wasn’t the first time Georges had hit success on Bishop Street. He also owned a café and nightclub in the neighbourhood, so he knew the area well. “Challenge is what drives me,” he says. “There’s nothing I can’t surpass. There are obstacles, but you go over them.”
Le Plantain - AAA charcoal grilled 6oz beef patty garnished with lettuce, tomatoes and caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms and cream cheese, served in a Gluten-free plantain bun. $12
This specialty restaurant on Bishop Street, which prepares all of its burgers over charcoal, awaits you with the Mykonos, a burger that comes adorned with a chutney made of onions, figs and walnuts. Everything is gently placed on arugula and served on a bread made with olives, rosemary and feta. It’s like a fast food chain, but very different.
Here, the meats are grilled over charcoal and served on a bun with salad and caramelized onions. At the center of it all, you can have beef, chicken, veggie pâté, bison or salmon. Or else, get dirty (we suggest you do!) with the Sloppy Chili Burger – why not!
