Nova Scotia: thousands of islands and kilometres of rocky coasts

The second smallest province in Canada, after Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia is inhabited by just over 920,000 people ... and 3,000 small lakes. Its rocky coastline covers over 7,000 kilometres, and includes more than 3,800 small islands. Nova Scotia is also home to the oldest African community in Canada! This doesn’t, however, prevent the English language from dominating the majority of exchanges, with over 90 per cent of the population speaking the language of Shakespeare at home.

It is in Nova Scotia that we find the greatest number of fisheries on the Atlantic coast: 47 per cent of fish turn up here. Interestingly, while over three quarters of the active population works in the services sector (health, business and education), only 57 per cent of Nova Scotia’s inhabitants live in cities.

When you think of Nova Scotia, think of Scotland, as the Gaelic culture is very present. We can see this in the popular arts festivals of Gaelic Mod or Highland Games, celebrated in Antigonish every year — and this since the 1860s. It is also here that we find the only symphony orchestra on the Atlantic (Canadian) coast.

But it is impossible to ignore all of the natural and historical beauty found here: the famous Cabot Trail hiking route, the fortress of Louisbourg, the steep coast over which the waves unleash themselves from the sea, and much more.
